Sight Word Activity

I have a student that I love to death, but I just can't get her to learn her sight words!  One day she knows 40 and the next day 4.  I know she is SOOOO SMART!!!!

Well, I started doing this little game with her last week, and Oh My Goodness!!!!  She knows all her sight words consistently.  Her problem was that she would just guess a word.  I made this little game for her and it is WORKING!!!!
I put a sightword on a card and told her to get her mouth ready.
While she looked at the card, I used the word in a sentence.  I then made her read the card.  I combined get your mouth read and does it make sense.

Why did I never think of this before????
Uh...can we say an Ed.S in reading did pay off.... eventually!  :)  I was starting to question it and the money I spent....

Here is a copy of the game I made with the sentences, words, and directions.

I just love cherries, not the fruit...hate them...but the graphics!!!

President's Day Book

I am making a President's Day Unit for TPT and TeacherEBooks and wanted to give you guys some of the unit.  Be gentle with my clipart.  I made it very quickly while working on lesson plans, blogs, and being mom.  I figured everyone could use this because there is NOTHING out there for President's Day.  Enjoy!

Make sure you download this copy.  Made a little typo!
Also, I think Google Docs changed, because I can't use the embedded Doc option any more.  If someone figures it out, please share how to do it again.  Thanks!

Groundhog Unit and Books

This unit comes from my old website LoveTwoTeach.  I made it about 7 years ago, but there are some cute things that you can use for Groundhogs Day.
It is nothing fancy!
I drew only black and white graphics back then because one of our Kindergarten and First Grade benchmarks was for fine motor skills and coloring. I love using color now!  I don't think I even had my own printer in my classroom back then.

Directions Lesson: How to Write Directions

I was writing this up when Primary Perspective posted her cute Expository Writing tonight.  I think many of us First Grade Teachers are doing the same units right now.  :)  Directions is coming up for me next week.  Here is part of my independent Writing Center for Directions.  I plan to put it out after sharing some great expository examples.
I thought I would leave out some candy, balloons, and other things for kids to write to explain how to eat them, open them, blow them up (balloons)...  I can't wait to see what I get!  Being a teacher is so much fun!!!  I plan on ending on Friday with a build a Smore celebration with Primary Perspectives Smore's building steps and directions.

ABC Order Center

This can be used for Ruby in Her Own Time for spelling words and HFW's.  I also gave 3 sheets blank for those of you who could use it for your spelling words.  You just write them in and you have ABC Order Ducks and a recording sheet.  My kids think that ABC order with fun shapes is so much cooler than using the words on index cards or tiles.  Hey... Whatever works!!!
Download Here:
WOW!!! I love using the embedded download file!  How easy and fun to do!!!  Thanks for sharing Ladybug's Teacher Files and Mrs. Arnold to the rescue once again!!!

Ruby In Her Own Time Lesson

Most of what I am posting today goes with our Scott Foresman Story, Ruby in Her Own Time.  Many of you can use it.  This story is about changes in our student's lives.  I am also going to make a timeline to view changes as they age.  I will post the rest of the unit soon.

Here is the book:
I am not a huge fan of Scott Foresman so I make a ton of stuff to supplement.  I pretty much teach the "skill of the week", but do it my way and not what is in the manual.  This is my first year teaching this series, and I am already bored with it.  The students do not like the stories.  Thank goodness for my shopping addiction!!! I have a wealth of good literature and BIG BOOKS!!!!  Love Ebay for some BIG BOOKS cheap!!!!  I'd love to hear anyone else who uses SF and what they do with the series.  I know Waltke's web (not a big fan) and a few others.  Anything different????

I think it is up to me and Mrs. Arnold to Fancy up Scott Foresman for all of us EXCELLENT, STELLAR, SUPERSTAR TEACHERS!!!!!

Word Families

I am multi-tasking as we speak.  I am finishing Gladys's blog for my class Tuesday, and starting the other two I need for the class.  One will be my new blog making site.  I can't wait!!!!  I also made business cards, made dinner, cleaned, laundry (well, told Mr. Walsky to do do that, I delegated :)), and lesson plans.  Now I am making some center and fun stuff for this week.  Here is the first of a few ones today.  Hope you can use them.

I think next on the list is to send Mr. Walsky out for some ice cream...

Ice Cream Compound Words

For this Working on Words Center all you do is cut apart the scoops of ice cream from the cone and let the student's make compound words.  This is making me crave some Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream right now!

ABC Order Sundaes

I am not sure how many of you all use Scott Foresman, but I made an ABC Order Sundae activity for the An Egg is an Egg.  I just liked the graphics, and plan on doing some hot chocolate, cookie, and cupcake stuff next week.  I hope you can use it.  Let me know if you would like the template to make your own.  I can probably email you the blank one to add your own words.

Cupcake Contractions

Inspired by First Grade At Last, I decided to make my own Cupcake Contractions.  I can't wait to do this when we get back.  I may have to have a winter cupcake day with our hot chocolate activities.  I may make them use Alphabits or Alphabet sprinkles on cupcakes to spell contractions.  Maybe Twizzlers so they can cut the words?!!!
Click on the Picture for Delicious Cupcake Contractions!!!  I am going to laminate and cut the tops off so that they can make matches.
Make sure you download this copy.  I had a little typo.  I guess working at midnight because of my delicious Starbucks White Mocha had a typo on a cupcake.  All is fixed!

Predictions, Speech Bubbles, and More

I have been using this during Work on Writing for years, and my students love it!  I use pictures and write things such as:
What Comes Next?
What are they Thinking?
What Happened Before?
Speech Bubbles
Then the students fill out this form
How much fun is this?

Vowel Sounds of Y

I am done Christmas shopping and was snowed in today at my house.  I decided to start working on some ideas for January when we get back to school.  Our next story in Scott Foresman is An Egg is an Egg.  We are going to practice the sounds of Y, so I made some games.  I will upload them over the next few days.  Does anyone else do anything with the vowels sounds of Y?  Here is a copy of my game for download.  Let me know your thoughts.

Fun Little Elf Project

I am getting back to posting.  These last few days have been hectic!  I had report cards and Winter Celebrations!  I am officially out of school, but I wanted to post this really cute Elf project.  My kids made this really cute ornament or magnet if you wanted to put magnet tape on the back.  I had the students color an elf sheet and cut it out.  I took pictures with my camera and printed them off.  Here are the ornaments we made.  I also incorporated some writing activities.  Our school is a Franklin Covey Leadership School.  We value all children and teach them that they are leaders in something, and we help them to determine what that leadership may be.  I designed an elf sheet that incorporates the student writing about what they are a leader at, just like Santa's elves are leaders.

You can download my Elf Sheets in color and Black and white here:

We also read these books:

Rudolph

I saw a fabulous idea for Rudolph, and I can't remember where I found it, but I took the idea and ran...  I took pictures of my students using the black and white option on my camera.  I printed them off and added a glitter red nose.  Then, I had the kids cut out their pictures and make antlers to turn themselves into Rudolph.  Next, the kids had to fill out a job application to apply for Rudolph's job this year, because he is retiring.  They had to create their own Reindeer name and answer why they think they would be a good reindeer.

Here are their pictures!

So much fun, and the kids loved it!
I love how their antlers are so different!

Sight Word Tic Tac Toe

I had to come up with a Harvest Activity for our School's Family Fun Title 1 Night.  I decided to come up with a sight word Tic Tac Toe Game.  I printed out the tic tac toe sheet and laminated them.  I used crayons to write sight words or letters and the students had to read the word in order to put an X or an O.  For letters, the students had to say the letter name or the letter sound.  This was a fun way to teach spelling words, sight words, and letters.  Feel free to use it any way you see fit!
